Fern Aasen

Fern Aasen, age 90, of Wheeler, WI passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Colfax Health and Rehabilitation.

The former Virginia "Fern" Harland was born August 17, 1923 in Dunn County to Clifford and Ruby (Owen) Harland and grew up in the Tainter Lake area. She attended Riverside School, Colfax High School and Dunn County Aggie.

In 1941, Fern married Carl Thomas and three children were born to this union, Maryn "Patsy", Robert and Richard Thomas who were all raised in Eau Claire.

Fern returned to the Tainter area in the mid 1970's and cared for her mother for about ten years until her death.

On Oct. 5, 1985, Fern married Julian Aasen and became a member of Hay River Lutheran Church. Julian preceded her in death in 1989.

Fern enjoyed the outdoors, working in her flowers beds and in the yard. She also enjoyed quilting with the women at church, watching the humming birds and baking, in addition to spending time with her family.

Fern is survived by her children, Maryn Thomas of Wheeler, Robert Thomas of Wheeler and Richard Thomas of Colfax; her grandchildren, Jennifer Thomas of Chesapeake, VA, Hope Nagel of Everett, WA, Cory Thomas, Melissa Hibbard and Jeffery Thomas all of Eau Claire; great-grandchildren, Karlyn Thomas, Joshua and Jordan Thomas, Brett and Eric Nagel; great-great-granddaughter, Isabel LuEdna Kaplar; two sisters, June (Dennis) Scheel of New Prague, MN and Geneva (Earl) Wait of Menomonie; as well as nieces, nephew and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Julian Aasen; sisters, Florence Nieman and Carol Krohmer; and brothers, Owen "Mike" Harland and Eugene "Dutch" Harland.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Ridgeland Lutheran Church, Ridgeland. WI with Pastor David Sands officiating. There will be visitation at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Olson Funeral Home of Menomonie is serving the family.
