Lawrence “Larry” R. Olson, age 70, of Menomonie, WI died, Thursday, April 7, 2011 at The Dunn County Healthcare Center in Menomonie. \n \n He was born April 14, 1940 in Menomonie, WI to Richard & Harriet L. (Decker) Olson. Larry graduated from Menomonie High School and followed by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force where he served 4 years mostly in San Antonio, TX. Following his stint in the service he married Shari Otto of Menomonie and they had two children, Christopher and Shelley. He returned to Menomonie and received his Bachelors and his Masters Degrees in Clinical Psychology from The University Of WI Stout in Menomonie. He continued his education by completing his Doctorate degree from U of Texas at Commerce. Larry moved between Glendive and Butte, Montana for about 8 years working as a Clinical Psychologist. \n \n In 1983 he moved to Cumberland, WI where he continued his work at Northern Pines until 1999. \n \n He continued consulting with the Social Security Administration and the Division Of Vocational Rehabilitation for individuals from many counties throughout Wisconsin until retiring in 2002. \n \n In 1995 he married Susan Klawitter in Menomonie. Susan assisted Larry with his studies to secure his state licensure in order to continue his professional counseling, which he was excellent at. \n \n Larry had a great love for the outdoors. He enjoyed trout fishing and loved tying his own flies to lure the big ones in and tried to teach Sue, with little success. He was intrigued by nature and all the birds and animals, god had created. While living on Prairie Lake near Chetek, the birds were plentiful and they enjoyed watching and listening to them. Snowstorms were “fun” for him and he would take his 4 wheel drive truck out in them to play in the snow. \n \n He loved the sounds of big engines and drag racing was especially interesting to him and the two of them went to Brainerd International for several events. Jazz music was a fascination as well as learning war history. He was a very talented artist, painting and drawing for his own pleasure and experimenting with colors , shadows and particulars in his pieces as they represented life itself. \n \n Larry is survived by his wife, Sue of Rice Lake, WI; a daughter, Shelley Olson of Fargo, ND; a granddaughter, Brea Olson of S. St. Paul, MN; his mother, Harriet Shervey of Menomonie; siblings, Daniel (Evelyn) Olson of Meridian, ID, Susan (Bob) Amick of Cedar Falls, Sandy (Michael) Lockwood of Menomonie, John (Roberta) Shervey of Menomonie and Joseph (Lori) Shervey of Menomonie; brother-in-law, Dale (Dee) Klawitter of Osceola; 2 sisters-in-law, Carol (Jim) Brown of Rice Lake and Fay (Al) Urbanek of Winona, MN; his trusty sidekick and friend, his dog “Buddy”: many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; mother of their children, Shari Otto Neva. \n \n He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher; his dad, Alfred Shervey and his father, Richard Olson. \n \n Funeral Service will be held on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie with Pastor Geoff Scott officiating. Burial will take place at Lower Weston Cemetery, Dunn County, WI. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home \n \n Olson Funeral Home of Menomonie is serving the family.
